About ASA

Alpha Sigma Alpha promotes high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among our four aims of intellectual, physical, social and spiritual. Alpha Sigma Alpha provides opportunities through sisterhood, heritage, leadership, and service.

Intellectual Aim

Alpha Sigma Alpha members are challenged to strive for their best intellectual development through every possible means, educationally and personally. A well-educated and informed woman is an asset to her family, community, and society. With knowledge comes both self-confidence and humility.

Alpha Sigma Alpha promotes education through undergraduate and graduate scholarships for members and nonmembers and recognizes individuals through the Hermes Society and by giving awards and special recognition for academic excellence and academic improvement.

Spiritual Aim

Spiritual development is more than specific religious or denominational commitment. It is a commitment to the inner self, or self-esteem and a belief or view of the world and the individual’s place in it. Without inner-reflection and peace, people miss out on an essential part of individual development that is crucial to leading a productive and content life.

Social Aim

The purpose of social development is to provide a variety of personal, social and learning experiences and opportunities that will build the self-confidence and interpersonal skills of participants.

Greek letter organizations offer opportunities to meet people, make friends and improve communication and personal etiquette skills. Membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha provides many opportunities to improve social skills that will result in improved self-confidence and self-esteem. Social development and the ability to work with others begins with accepting committee assignments, officer positions, and attendance and leadership development seminars and social functions.
